Myths About Hair and Don't Believe It

Many of us have heard a few hair myths, but which ones should we believe. Are the myths really just a myth, or are some of them true? There are some things that you can do to damage or cause hair loss, and there are some things that are not bad for your hair. Don't believe everything you hear about your hair though, there are some pretty crazy myths out there. Here are a few of the common myths we thought we would straighten out for you.

First myth we want to correct would be the myth that cutting your hair will cause it to become thicker. This is not true. The thickness of your hair cannot be altered by cutting it either, even though it may appear too. If you think your hair looks thicker it may be because your hair is thicker at the base than it is at the tip. The only thing you can do try to thicken your hair would be a texturizing perm or dye, or volumizing shampoo.

Cutting your will also not cause it to grow faster, neither will brushing it one hundred strokes a day. If you brush your hair this much you may actually cause more damage and breakage to your hair. Hair usually responds better when you use a comb anyway.

Next are a couple of myths about shampoo and conditioner. With shampoo you only need about a quarter size to get your hair clean. If you have very long hair you may need a little more, but not too much. All that extra shampoo is not doing you any good. Next is how often you wash your hair. Washing your hair everyday will not harm it if you have the right shampoo for your type of hair. Washing your hair can actually make it healthier. Conditioner does not repair split ends. Yes that's right, it does not repair. Conditioner may make the hair look as though it is less damaged, but it does not repair the damage. A good conditioner may also help protect your hair from future damage.

Here are a few myths about things that do not cause hair loss. Dying, perming, blow drying and sun exposure do not cause hair loss. It is true that dying and perming your hair may cause damage to your hair, especially if you over do it, but it will not cause hair loss. Blow drying can also damage your hair by burning it or drying which may cause it to fall out, but the hair will grow right back. In order for the sun to cause hair loss it would have to affect the follicle, which it doesn't.

Here are a couple of things that may cause hair loss so pay attention. Stress, diet, and tight hairstyles are all linked to hair loss. If you are extremely stressed you may suffer from temporary hair loss. Once the stress has passed the scalp usually recovers and the hair returns to normal. Diet can also cause hair loss, so make sure you are eating healthy to keep your body healthy and functioning properly. Tight hairstyles that are worn for long periods of time can damage and break the hair and cause tension to the scalp. In some cases this hair loss has become permanent. This of course is from wearing your hair like this all the time, but be sure you are aware of the damage you can cause. A more relaxed hair style will benefit your scalp and your hair.

Smokers are you ready for this? Smoking can cause your hair to turn gray or fall out faster. Studies have shown that smokers are four times more likely to get gray hair than women who don't smoke. Smoking has been shown to speed up hair loss too. If you needed another reason to stop smoking here it is.
